fusion-text-1">
How did you become interested in millinery?

I’ve always had a love of accessories. When I was very little I would often be seen with a handbag and my favourite yellow umbrella, so hats seemed a natural progression as I got older.

Please describe the first hat you made.

My first hat was a black peachbloom felt with a small downturned brim and quite a high straight crown. It was trimmed with a black organdie drape and oversize paper roses in pink and red. Think Undertaker, but prettier! I remember my millinery teacher being quite horrified at the thought of it, but admitted, once it was made, that somehow it worked. I wore it to death and then pulled the roses off to re-use.

Where and how did you learn millinery?

I had planned to do a millinery course in Melbourne when I was about 19, but never managed to get the money together, so finally, when I was about 28 and working in London (backstage as a theatre mechanist), I enrolled in night classes at the London College of Fashion.

I had started to go a bit mad, working in such a creative industry and not doing anything more creative than putting sets up and moving scenery about in the dark, so the night classes were really just to see where I might want to go when I decided I’d had enough of working backstage.

From my first class I was hooked. I took classes over the next 18 months, all the while working backstage.

Where have you worked?

My first millinery job was in the Hat & Jewellery Dept of Covent Garden. We made all the hats, headdresses and jewellery for both The Royal Opera and The Royal Ballet Companies. It was an amazing enviroment; a department with 4 full-time milliners who were extraordinarily talented and generous with their knowledge.

In many ways it was like being hot housed – we made an amazing array of hats, tiaras and accessories, and in many ways it set me up to work anywhere in the world.

When I moved back home after 11 years in London, I found an ad in the Saturday paper for a milliner. It was for Phillip Rhodes, and I worked for him for a season, making his ready to wear collection and trimming the odd model hat for his racing clients. Although I trained as a fashion milliner, it’s the one time I’ve worked in fashion.

I am now Head of Millinery for The Australian Ballet, and we make all the hats, headdresses and jewellery, as well as wings, and occasionally things like masks and costume props.

Where do you get inspiration for your designs?

Being a maker for the Ballet, I rarely design. Each new show has a designer that I work very closely with, and my input varies enormously depending on how that designer likes to work and how they feel about headwear.

My job is to make their vision come to life and that is incredibly satisfying. While some designers may have sewing experience, very few have any millinery experience and that puts me in an amazing position. To have a designer’s face light up and say that what I have made them is exactly what they wanted is very exciting. Equally, it can go the other way!

What materials and techniques do you favour?

One of the things I love about my job is the variety. I can be working on a hat made of thermoplastic one day and a headdress made with millinery wire and lace the next. What I love to work with most, however, is felt. There is something about the soft, sculptural quality that I love, although these days I rarely make a felt hat that isn’t a tricorn.

What has been your most enjoyable commission?

Over the years I’ve made so many shows that have been exciting and challenging, but the commission I loved the most was for my mother-in-law’s youngest sister who has Downs syndrome. She was marrying her best friend who also had Downs, and it was such a fantastic thing for both of them. They were so happy and proud, and adored each other. It was very simple, a headband with fabric daisies and a short veil, but it’s still the headdress that I’m most proud of making.

How would you describe your style of hats?

It’s hard to know, so much of what I do is designed by other people. But I guess my style would be quite strong and bold, probably quite architectural.

Who do you make hats for?

Almost exclusively ballet dancers, occasionally opera singers and very occasionally a bride (the non bridezilla variety only).

Who would you love to make a hat for?

The idea of making a hat for a celebrity doesn’t really grab me; what I find exciting is the idea of collaboration. If I was going to do fashion I’d love to do a bride with Akira or a runway show for Vivienne Westwood, something that was a complete fantasy and not at all constrained by convention. I’d also quite like to do a winter collection with someone like Martin Grant. That way everything could be made out of felt. Failing that I’ve always wanted to work on the Myer Christmas windows and on a Moomba float (which may have more chance of becoming a reality).

Which other milliners or artists in general do you admire?

I’m a fan of Philip Treacy. I think he not only pushes the boundaries of headwear in a way that is quite theatrical, but he also made women think about what they put on their heads differently. There is something so flattering to women about his hats (recent royal wedding hoopla aside).

The photographs of Diane Arbus are a favourite for their bizarre staged theatricality, as are Pedrop Almodovar’s films for the same reason. I love Julia DeVille’s jewellery and taxidermy, Sam Scmidt’s incredibly detailed landscape photos, and I have a real thing for modernist architecture. I could go on, the list is very long!

Do you wear your own hats? Or hats in general?

I do, although I have very few and most of Melbourne has seen them now, so it may be time to run up a couple more. My favourite at the moment is a fake fur hunting cap with ear flaps, which I bought in the David Jones Men’s Department.

Do you teach millinery?

Not formally, but I take on tertiary level work experience students who are studying costume design and want to specialise in millinery. It’s something I think about more often as I’m getting older, so who knows?

Do you have any other interests, hobbies?

I’ve always loved a craft project, but having a 4-year-old I have discovered that making kids costumes is brilliant fun, and I read voraciously and listen to a lot of music. I’ve recently started cycling a lot, so instead of just staying up watching the Tour de France I now actually get on a bike. And I’m a bit of a Liverpool Football Club fan after all those years in London, surrounded by a nation of mad football fans. It was a case of get interested or not have a conversation for 6 months of the year!

During late high school, I was a bit preoccupied with Victorian fashion. When millinery was mentioned at a careers evening, millinery sounded like the perfect job. I was told “Nobody wears hats! Choose a modern career!” That fired the spark even more!

Where did you learn millinery?

The Hat Factory in Auckland. When I learnt there, I was taught by old school milliners – wonderful ladies!

How long have you been a milliner for? Where else did you work?

Ten years, a couple of years while studying at university for a BA (Soc Sci). I also trained first as a florist, which I have found fabulous for developing a knack for line and composition.

Where do you get inspiration for your designs?

Sometimes I like to work by taking hats from other decades and modernising/putting my own spin on them. I get ideas all the time from colours, shapes, images that make an impression. The main thing is to make a hat that looks good with a particular outfit and the person’s face shape, cheekbones, jawline and shoulder width. Headgear is very subjective.

What has been your most enjoyable commission?

For an international dance group, I made up petal comb headpieces to go with their funky 60s style outfits. The colours of the outfits and the headpieces were really out-there and inspired. It’s always a kick to work on something completely different.

How would you describe your style of hats?

An emphasis on lines and angles to work with faces. Fun, quirky, but elegant and edgy. Often they work well on their own, but sometimes I trim to give softness and frivolity to a hat. I often find I have themes (such as my “candy range” hats inspired by licorice allsorts and ice mints). I particularly enjoy adding a modern feel to hats from other decades, the 50s styles are my favourites.

Who do you make hats for? That is, church goers? Brides? Everyday winter wear?

Weddings, races, fashion shows and everyday wear. I also do quite a bit of work for brides that want to wear something a bit offbeat.

What materials and techniques do you favor?

That varies a lot depending on my current ideas of the moment. At the moment I’m having fun with various braids and beads. At the moment, there’s a lot of uniting fabric, sisals and swiss braids together.

I was Period Costume Designer for National Historic Sites Branch of Parks Canada (a Canadian Government agency that runs many historic sites across Canada). My job required me to research historic clothing cut and construction and create historically accurate reproduction costumes that were then worn or exhibited in these sites. Naturally, hats are part of a complete costume. Before I worked at Parks Canada, I had no special interest in headwear. I crocheted my winter hats to match my coats. However when I began creating reproduction costumes, I was fascinated by hats – their design, materials and construction. I found the sculptural quality of a hat intriguing.

Where and did you learn millinery?

I studied on the job under Senior Period Costume Designer, Theresa Ingram, at Parks Canada and at Richard Robinson’s L’académie des Couturiers Canadiens, Ottawa, in the 1970s and early 80s. I continued studying historic millinery by research and observation of examples in collections throughout Canada and the United States.

When is a busy period for millinery in Canada?

The hat making season begins for me in February or March because those are the months when government departments determine their summer exhibition needs and, since March 31 is the ‘year-end’ for many museums and government departments, I often get orders to fill by that date. Otherwise, the summer and bridal requests begin in March and April. I will be busy with bridal until the end of July and sometimes September. Winter orders begin in late August for October/November. The consulting and teaching is a year-round activity which means I am busy year round and extra busy from March to July. Thankfully, the hat orders are ‘scarce’ for a week or two in August and just before Christmas because I like to recharge my creative batteries and take care of my family.

There isn’t a particular event, as such, in the Ottawa area that would rival an event such as Ascot. However, there are many events attended by diplomats and politicians who require beautiful hats.
How long have you been a milliner for? Where else did you work?

I have been making hats professionally since the 1970s, but I also supplied my dolls with hats when I was a girl. I worked at Parks Canada for 22 years. I had a part-time millinery business in the late 80s, early 90s and have been working (as a milliner and consultant) for myself full time since 1998.

Where do you get inspiration for your designs?

I am influenced by couture houses in Europe and millinery designers in the United Kingdom, but I look to fashion history for inspiration as well. I am not a slave to the ‘latest craze’ but create works that are beautiful and compliment my clients. I collect antique and vintage hats for their shapes, decorative trims and unusual materials. My earliest piece is a mourning bonnet similar to what Queen Victoria was depicted wearing in her later years and I have a growing collection of vintage bridal veils and headpieces.

What has been your most enjoyable commission?

Usually, my most favourite hat is the one I have just finished. However, in general, I get the most personal satisfaction out of making historical reproduction hats because of the challenge to recreate the look and essense of something that hasn’t been made or worn for decades or centuries.

My most favourite recent bridal hat was a tiny tricorn with a heart-shaped crown covered with bronze silk satin which matched the bride’s dress… and then there was the large brimmed, black balibuntal trimmed with hand painted imitation onion grass, reminiscent of a late Edwardian hat.

How would you describe your style of hats?

Classic styles with a twist – elegant, smart, wearable, finely crafted. I pride myself in creating hats that fit well and make my clients look beautiful.

My reproduction millinery and accessories are carefully researched, and finely crafted with the finest and most appropriate materials possible within the client’s budget.

Who do you make hats for? Church goers? Brides? Everyday winter wear?

I make historic reproduction hats and accessories for museums, historic sites, and people who use them for business or pleasure. My modern hats are mostly bridal; brides who want something different, as well as wedding attendees. I also supply hats to an exclusive clothing designer in the Ottawa area. The vast majority of the modern hats I make are for summer wear. However, I do many dressy winter hats (fur felts) for religious events.

I also consult for museums, private collectors and government departments and I teach millinery to whomever wishes to learn.

What materials and techniques do you favor?

I should say that I prefer making pattern hats (fabric/sewn) the least. I find them a little too restrictive and a lot of work for the results I achieve. This sounds terribly negative, but it seemed easier to tell you what I like the least than list all the materials and techniques I love to use. However, I work with most every traditional millinery material – straws, fur felt, wire frame, buckram and wire, velvet, silk, lace, linen – and new materials like sinamay. I make my own flowers by stiffening and manipulating silk and other less traditional fabrics into orchids, roses, poppies, etc. I also embellish my hats and accessories with embroidery and beading.

All my lined hats are lined with silk. I find it the nicest fabric to put against the hair and, of course, it adds an extra touch of glamour to each hat.

Any other interests?

My other interests include creative and historic needlework of all kinds, beading and restoration of embroideries. My hobby is researching and collecting 20th century blankets which were manufactured or used in Canada. I am building a database of blanket labels with the ultimate goal of creating a dating tool.

I was a fashion/tailor student in the fashion school of the Hague. A friend of mine who was studying costume knew a milliner and asked her to teach us millinery for fun. I enjoyed it and continue to take lessons with this lady. I was impressed and enthusiastic about millinery. I continued from there.

Where and why did you learn millinery?

When I finished the fashion/tailor school, I took lessons with Rose Cory (London) and started my own business. Every summer I took lessons at the London College of Fashion in summer school and master classes taught by Susie Hopkins (London).

How long have you been a milliner for?

I have had my own business for more then 10 years. In the beginning the company name was “Head and Housetrends”; at that stage I designed/made a lot of things. I made baskets for old-timers, soft furnishing articles, slipcovers for furniture. I worked together with a firm that produced suede/leather clothes and I designed hats for them. A few years ago I decided to specialise in hats alone even though Holland is not known for hat-wearing! I changed the company name to Berry Rutjes Jr. (my own name), chose a new logo, brief paper/envelopes, creating a whole new house style. I also rebuilt the shop, like a French hat shop/atelier (a little bit of Paris in Gouda).

Where do you get inspiration for your designs?

I get a lot of inspiration when I am in France. Not only from the fashion, but also food, buildings, people, etc. I prefer good traditions and techniques and then give my own expression to it. I also really love shoes, bags, hand gloves and accessories. However, I have specialsed in hats. I also still make little handbags that compliment my hats and cuffs, just a bit of fun! I admire good craftsmanship and passion in someone’s work. I hope my own work expresses that also.

How would you describe your style of hats?

Colourful, stylish. Mostly occasion wear. When you have the right accessories, you only can wear a “black” dress and look wonderful.

Who do you make hats for?

Most of the time I make hats for brides, special occasions and for people attending Sunday church.

I also made hats for the wedding of Maxima and Willem-Alexander (our Crown-Prince) in February 2002. Every year we have “Prinsjesdag”, the third Tuesday in September, when every minister wears a hat (not all of mine of course!).

I work with some fashion designers locally (bridal shops/couturier) and I also wholesale to a shop in Japan (where they adore my European way of working). I have also made hats for a shops in Berlin, Münster and Antwerp.

What materials and techniques do you favor?

I do like a lot of materials, but I primarily work with velour’s (felt), sisal, parabuntal, florentine straw and sinamay. I also use etamine/sparterie. I like to use a lot of special feathers and handmade flowers on my hats.

I’ve been wearing hats as long as I can remember. As a kid, I was always running around with something fun and crazy on my head. As I got older I started collecting vintage hats and clothing, it was a natural progression I guess.

Where and did you learn millinery?

In the summer of 1998 I got a loft in New England’s largest artists community in Boston. There aren’t a lot of schools offering millinery courses in the States, so I decided to teach myself the art of millinery. I got my hands on a couple of old millinery books and de-constructed some vintage hats to see how they were made. I resolved myself to learning the classic techniques first with the hopes that the rest would come later. It was then I found my true passion… hats!

How long have you been a milliner for?

I was confident I could call myself a milliner when I won 1st Runner as The Hat Magazines, International Hat Designer of the Year in August 2001. I worked in retail management and designed women’s accessories until 1998.

Where do you get inspiration for your designs?

Inspiration for me comes from all directions. Oddly enough, I get great inspiration from the mistakes I’ve made. Sometimes the best creations are stumbled upon by accident. My Hat Studio, which I designed and decorated, abounds with colour, light, pictures, music, books and rolls of fabric. Music and movies are a big inspiration as well.

My greatest inspiration, however, was my grandmother Mamie, who passed away in 1998. She was an amazing self-taught designer and seamstress. With her passing I felt an epiphany to explore my creative desires, which further allowed me to pursue my dreams.

What has been your most enjoyable commission?

Creating a bridal headpiece for a women who was wearing her mother’s Grace Kelly style wedding dress. It was a disc design, 18″/46cm in diameter, covered in ivory veil. It had an abstract modern feel to it that integrated perfectly with the dress. It was so unlike the traditional styles brides in the States usually wear.

How would you describe your style of hats?

From wild and whimsical to funky and sublime. Classic to modern form and fashion.

Who do you make hats for?

The past few seasons have seen an increased interest in hat wearing in the States. Many celebrities, especially the music industry, have enewed the trend of hat wearing. I’ve designed hats for Alicia Keys, TLC and a number of music videos.

It’s also been an unusually cold and snowy winter this year. People who have never worn hats before are buying hats this season. Surprisingly, many have purchased the more whimsical designs and have come back for more. A number of Jewish clients love the “one of a kind” designs for temple and social events. Many younger women getting married these days are going for the more unusual bridal headpieces, which is quite refreshing.

What materials and techniques do you favor?

I really enjoy working with panama straw and felts. Block makers are so rare, I learned to improvise and create a free form design by sculpting and molding the hat by hand. Creating a wearable art piece that comes to life on the client is always a design goal.

Any other interests?

Interior design and construction, music, theatre, independent movies and travel. It’s very important for me to socialize and meet other creative like-minded individuals. For me, nothings more enjoyable then having an evening of dinner and great dialogue with friends; it’s the best therapy.

How did you become interested in millinery?
I was always artistic and enjoyed fashion. My mother decided my future. During the 40s and 50s there was not a lot of work choice for young women.

I did enjoy learning millinery. When I learnt millinery, junior milliners sat next to a senior milliner and were helped and taught their methods. It was best to change jobs to get a better range of techniques.

Where and why did you learn millinery?
I started at Norman’s (Collins Street, Melbourne) in 1948, then at Beverley Hats (Centreway, Melbourne0 in 1949 and then Thomas Harrison (Collins Street, Melbourne) in 1950.

How long have you been a milliner for?
Part time for 30 years. I joined Raymor Hats in Flinders Lane in 1952. By this time I was a senior and stayed until 1959. Around this time hat fashion had declined and hair design became the fashion. The beehive look was the fashion of the time.

Where do you get inspiration for your designs?
From fashion magazines and using my own interpretation, making sure my hats were not copies but as original as possible.

What has been your most enjoyable commission?
Making my own designs for retail. In my early years we copied hats; there was very little of one’s creativity in most hats.

How would you describe your style of hats?
Very wearable, but do lean toward 1950s styles

Who do you make hats for?
Anyone who enjoys wearing hats.

What materials and techniques do you favor?
I really enjoy sinamay. I feel it is a milliners friend. Now that Esparterie has gone. I was taught in the era model millinery was totally hands on and sculptured. So I find sinamay adapts to this method well.

Any other interests?
I also enjoy fashion sewing.

As a professional ladies wear manufacturer, I found this medium of three dimensional wearable art intriguing. Shortly after that, I saw an “add” for hat making classes at the local Adult Education Center, and seized the chance to delve into this mysterious world of creating.

From there I dabbled in various workshops and classes. Without realizing at the time I had the privilege of refining my skills with under the guidance of some of the best Milliners Australia has had to offer. Jill Nolan, Doris Chivers, Peter Jago, Louise Macdonald – lucky me! I enjoy experimenting with different styles and textiles, playing with colour and texture. Lots of fun can be had with feathers and putting steam on straw.

Somewhere between now and then millinery became a large component of the couture business I have established in Melbourne (Australia). Supplying clients with clothing and headwear for their weddings and special occasions as well as the spring racing festivities Melbourne is reknowned for.

Considering the Client’s style and requirements are key factors when embarking on a commission but so is my desire to play with a unique combination of colour/shape/texture to produce a piece that will delight the wearer.

My most enjoyable commissions are where the Client allows me to produce their entire look, from clothing, hat, shoes and accessories; resulting in a gorgeous “total” outfit.

About 5 years ago the lack of block making services available lead me to team up with a very gifted wood carver. Since then we have been able to make blocks in many wonderful and exciting shapes for milliners both here in Australia and more recently in the United States and Britain. In fact most millinery materials seemed to be very hard to source, so it became a natural progression for me to hunt for suitable supplies, too. I now am able to offer milliners through out Australia and aboard a growing selection of interesting bits out of which they can make hats. Things like: sisal and ramie straws, vintage rochello and swiss-braid hat bodies and braids, stiffeners, wires, feathers, flowers,veiling-including French silks, hat elastics, combs, fur felts-melusines and velours, straw cloths, sinamays and sinamay prints and fancy weaves. The list keeps growing by the day.

Having said all that, it may seem like there is little time for anything else but I do enjoy time with my husband, who works in the Petroleum industry and my 10 year old son Kyle and 7 year old daughter Dominique. It is very rewarding being Mum to the two little ones, who are busy developing their own interests in sport and hobbies as well as school activities. And of other interests… collecting Carlton Ware, a little early morning walking, an odd glass of wine and good chats with friends.

I became interested in millinery back in the early 1980’s while I was in art school and decided to make myself a New Years dress and a matching hat. I was also fascinated by headwear from various countries and throughout history.

Where and how did you learn millinery?
My mother was a seamstress and taught me to sew. I also learned it from a friend of my moms while we were back in Paris. Later I took a workshop with Louise MacDonald.

How long have you been a milliner for?
Since the late 1980’s. I studied art and then Interior Design, but ventured into hat making late 1980’s, which led me to open up my own hat store.

Where else did you work?
I freelanced most of my life and supported myself on my creative ventures.

Where do you get inspiration for your designs?
From my vintage wardrobe, old movies, nature, and some sci-fi.

What has been your most enjoyable commission?
Creating a hat for a sci-fi series in Toronto Canada.

How would you describe your style of hats?
Vintage inspired.

Who do you make hats for? Churchgoers? Brides? Everyday wear?
Mostly for all occasions, I love creating hats for film and television. Anything that allows me to explore materials.

What materials and techniques do you favour?
Anything that I can sculpt.

Do you have any other interests, hobbies?
I am an artist (www.mariacurcic.ca) and a dj with my own station, www.radioradio.ca

After working as a designer of knitwear for the clothing industry in Europe for many, many years. I met an Israeli hat designer in Amsterdam. Together we designed a collection of knitted hats and caps that were introduced to the Dutch market first. I was so fascinated with the challenge of knitting 3-dimensional forms that I moved on to design and make my own knitted hats collection from that point on.

Where and why did you learn millinery?

I did not learn millinery. After finishing my fashion and textile design education at the Royal Academy of Arts in Den Haag, Netherlands, I worked as a knit. First in the Netherlands, later in Germany, as the market there was a better one at the time. I designed for the knitting industry in Italy, Great Britain, Germany and the Netherlands before I found the challenge, as well as my own skills, to work fully fashioned for the headwear market.

How long have you been a milliner for? Where else did you work?

I have been designing and making my own hats collection for the past 5 years. As a freelance designer I also work for the Opera in Munich and Theatre Festivals in Germany, knitting headwear and accessories, as well as making full knit collections.

Where do you get inspiration for your designs?

I find my inspiration in the use of the materials and the form of the head. I love to experiment with say a “classical millinery material” as straw and see how it can be knitted up. The experiments with knitting straw resulted in the pagoda hats, berets and the knitted lace straw hats.

What has been your most enjoyable commission?

I much enjoyed speaking about my hats collection, “Designing Knit Hats: A Shaping Adventure In 3-D Knitting!” Both at the World Congress Knitting of the University of Manchester, United Kingdom, in October 2002, as well as at the Nordic Knitting Congress of The School of Textiles in Borås, Sweden in May 2003.

How would you describe your style of hats?

My style of hats is elegantly simple, fascinating in detail!

Who do you make hats for?

My hats are made for all, grown-ups and kids who like to wear a knit hat!

What materials and techniques do you favor?

I prefer to use naturals only, as the comfort of wearing cashmere, silk and merino or straw is so smoothing to the skin.

I am thinking about introducing bamboo for my knit hats as this material is softer to the skin than straw and has the same “standing” capacity that is so important in knitted hats.

Most basic knitting techniques I use such as fully fashioned (form knitting in one piece) doublefaced or jacquard knitting. To form the jacquard and make the hats winter and rain protecting. I felt them afterwards giving the fabric a full new interesting surface!

Any other interests?

I love cooking and own around a hundred cook books from all over the world. I enjoy going for long walks along the shores or swim in the big lake where I live now, looking at the snowy Alps in the background.
