After graduated high school I was looking for a something special for my life instead of entering a university. And I found a hat shop where gives lessons in millinery. There was a decisive reason why I took the course is because my heart was beating with some feelings when I saw wooden hat blocks in there. I don’t know how I can explain that feelings I felt.and then,I decided to do that.

Where and why did you learn millinery?

I studied millinery in Korea with a lady who is the only person who gives a lesson in millinery in Korea. She studied millinery in France and I learnt how to make a felt hat, straw hat, soft hat and so on with her as a traditional way.But I felt it is not enough to know the hat in Korea so I decided to study abroad and found Kensington and Chelsea College which is in London. Eventually I finished HNC Millinery last year in spite of father’s opposition.

How long have you been a milliner for? Where else did you work?

I’d learnt millinery in Korea for about 2 years, I also assisted a milliner in Korea before I went to London for study. While I was studying in London, I did work-experience with Stephen Jones. Now I work as a bespoke milliner in Korea.

Where do you get inspiration for your designs?

It could be anything actually. The 6 hats for my final collection were inspired by fish and some of hats are picked elements from fish such as fins, tail, scales and over all movement of fish.

What has been your most enjoyable commission?

Probably the “HAT SHOW” during the HNC Millinery course. All of hats gave me a pleasure and pain at the same time. But I really enjoyed it!

How would you describe your style of hats?

A combination of classic and modern, delicate and the finest handwork.

Who do you make hats for?

My hats are for people who want to look special and different from the others. I make occasional hats and bride head pieces.

What materials and techniques do you favor?

I like working with finest material and making them as a traditional way. Also I love beading. That’s my favourite one.

Any other interests?

Reading (especially fashion magazine), going to gallery, museums, travel, cinema, yoga.

I had a mother who was a talented home dressmaker. As a young girl in the 1950s I would watch her making evening dresses and small hats to match. I would make dolls outfits from her off cuts. I graduated to making my own clothes. In the late 1970s, when I was a stay-at-home mother to three little boys, I decided to formally pursue my interest in design and fashion. I enrolled at the Canberra Technical College. Millinery was their final course. I immediately knew this was for me. Intensely artistic; an accurate expression of contemporary fashion but with lots of history; the discipline of the market-place. Within six months I had lots of people wanting to buy my creations. What a thrill that was.

Where did you learn millinery?

I trained at the Canberra Institute of Technology. In1990 I enrolled in Certificate III in millinery. The course consisted of four units. Bridal, Winter, Summer and Hand Tailored Headwear. I was lucky to encounter a couple of experienced, knowledgeable and enthusiastic millinery teachers. It took three years to complete. I then enrolled in Certificate IV. My main course project was a theatrical collection. I have also attended theatrical headwear workshops led by Jean Carroll.

How long have you been a milliner for? Where else did you work?

I have been a milliner now for 17 years. Prior to taking up millinery and after completing my fashion certificates, I reworked and extended some designs I had developed for my boys’ skate-board clothes, into a skate clothes label (Rad Rags), working from my new studio. For 3 years I provided a range of skate clothing to 4 shops; in Canberra, Sydney and Melbourne. But my heart wasn’t in it…

Where do you get inspiration for your designs?

I draw inspiration from my favourite eras; the 1920s and 30s. They were dynamic, confident, changing times. The use of felts and straws pleated, twisted and shaped has always fascinated me. I love texture. I see it everywhere. The sharp changes of seasons here in my home town in the mountains are also an inspiration, especially the colours and shapes of leaves. I enjoy adding to the theatre of the public ceremonies that often take place here too.

What has been your most enjoyable commission?

Perhaps it was my hat for the “Dressed To Kill” exhibition held at the Australian National Gallery in 1993. The exhibition was developed by the ANG to commemorate 100 years of fashion. I was commissioned to make two hats, including a small 30s style black velour felt to match a 1930s Molyneux black wool dress, which had the ends of the sleeves and the wrists become gloves, opening at the wrist with covered buttons. I had been shown all the dresses for the exhibition months before and choose which couple of outfits I would like to design hats for. As expected, there were lots of bureaucratic meetings and discussions. But finally, there was that famous dress, on display, with my new hat setting it off.

But it was also pretty exciting to see on TV, the Governor General’s wife at Camilla’s wedding, wearing one of the hats I’ve made for her…

How do you describe your style of hats?

My hats will sometimes be art; often they’re fun; but they will always be fashionable, well made and wearable.

Who do you make hats for?

I make hats for all occasions: racing carnivals, brides/weddings, parades, funerals. My specialty in the winter months are my hand felted wool cloches, berets and small hats. They range from informal fun to high-fashion headwear. Often teamed with my nuno-felted scarves, they’re popular with clients from colder climes, including from the northern hemisphere. From time to time I am commissioned to make theatrical pieces. For example, I have been commission by the Australian National Museum to make “ethnic’ hats for hands-on educational kits for exhibitions.

What materials and techniques do you favor?

I favour textured straws, velour felts and merino wool. I enjoy hand-blocking and sculpting in these materials. During Canberra’s winter, I particularly enjoy using materials/techniques born of the Southern Tablelands – the fine-wool capital of Australia. I am fascinated and taken by integrated process of starting with a ball of carded fleece and personally turning it into a beautiful hat. I have built on my brief training in this technique with lots of personal research and experimentation.

Any other interests?

I also enjoy teaching millinery. I run regular workshops with different groups of people here in Canberra. These include working in association with textile schools and women’s groups from different areas of the city. For example, one group I enjoy teaching is a group of women from French speaking countries – Canberra’s Accueil Club. They sometimes forget I don’t speak French, but they are diverse and interesting women.

I was working on St Kilda Road, Melbourne, and on the way back from work one evening I caught a tram. It was full of people and in the corner of my eye I saw a gorgeous senior citizen sitting proudly on her seat styled in wonderful attire that made everyone stop and stare. She had a lovely dress with an overcoat, shoes matching her bag, and gloves matching her hat! She left such an impression on me that she looked like she came out from the classic movies! During this time I was organizing my wedding and I went to see a milliner. As soon as I entered in her studio I was so overcome by her designs and colours that I quickly whispered to my best friend, “This is what I’m going to do!” To which she replied, “I have no doubt you will!”

Where and why did you learn millinery?

I took a course many years ago, with Peter Jago in 1992, and simply fell in love with the craft. I just could not get enough of learning different techniques and then I met the wonderful Mary Lock and Michele Cameron who I have been very fortunate to learn from for many years. I have also been educated by other accomplished milliners along the way. I then completed my full Certificate IV course at Kangan Batman College in Melbourne.

How long have you been a milliner for? Where else did you work? Who do you make hats for?

I have been a milliner since 1993 and I was the first milliner who sold hats at the Southgate Market when it first opened. I did quite well there and met many people in the art and craft industries. I then started to create hats in my workroom for race goers and brides.

Where do you get inspiration for your designs?

If you ask this question to a musician or songwriter, they would say from life experience, and I am going to say the same. I love to watch people and objects from a different perspective and always thinking about how I can incorporate the experience and manifest it into design. All my hats have a story behind it! My spider hat called “an arachnophobic nightmare” came from my childhood love of spiders. I used to collect them, study them and then release them back to their families. My last creation called “the sphere” was from an experience with my children, when one evening, while watching TV, my son looked out the window and saw the moon larger and fuller than normal. He yelled with excitement which alerted the family. We all ran out to the backyard with our telescope to watch the stars and the moon. Such a lovely family experience, hence another hat!

Throughout my childhood I was extremely good creating with my hands. I had been introduced to fashion by my aunt who was a dressmaker and tailor and had always been surrounded by beautiful materials. Thanks Aunty!

What has been your most enjoyable commission?

I had to do some headwear for a theatre production on planets. It was such a challenge as I had to make each individual planet in paper-mache measuring 1m by 1m circumference. They all had to be worn on heads whilst the dancers performed their routine. I found from this experience that millinery is not only about designing spectacular creations… but also about physics! I also love my customers who come to me with their dress and say “Create something for this dress… anything you like… call me when it’s ready!”

Recently, I had been fortunate to be invited to the Dubai Millinery Exhibition in 2006 and 2007. It was quite an experience meeting people from all over the world showcasing my designs along with other exceptional Australian milliners. It was great when one of my hats won the best hat for the Dubai World Cup 2007. I was so overwhelmed.

How would you describe your style of hats?

I describe my style as eclectic. I evolve my designs from season to season. I like my hats to be “remembered” for their artistic beauty. My hats are classical from a bygone era with a bit of quirkiness, avante garde, artistic, witty, sometimes wild but, most importantly, wearable and comfortable.

Who do you make hats for?

I predominately make hats for race goers, brides, after five, communions and garden parties. I work with many respected designers across Melbourne and I wholesale hats to many boutiques across Australia, Dubai and United States.

What materials and techniques do you favor?

I love working with straws, vintage fabrics, crinoline, felts, sinamay or anything unusual that I find in dark places! I love manipulating feathers and making silk flowers. I must admit that I have a real favour for hand-moulding and wire work. It gives me the freedom to express!

Any other interests?

When I am not working on hats, I love going out on the bay with the boat, sailing, reading great books and gym workouts. I love dinners with family and friends, and helping with my children’s sport and dance curriculums. Just being a great mum, wife, daughter, sister and friend!

I kind of fell into it. I went to sign up for a tap dancing class and it was full, so, since I was into vintage clothing and hats, I thought I would take a millinery class. That was almost 20 years ago. I never learned how to tap dance!

Where and why did you learn millinery?

I am self thought.

How long have you been a milliner for?

I have a social work background. I also waited tables in a punk rock bar and a comedy club, and sold bath and body products. I have been working as a milliner for about 18 years.

Where do you get inspiration for your designs?

I am inspired by the hat blocks themselves, and the unique way that raw materials react or repel against the wood. I also love old films, especially 1940s. And I love architecture, especially the sculptures of Henry Moore and the designs of Canadian architect Frank Gehry.

What has been your most enjoyable commission?

Oh, there are so many! I have a core group of fascinating and fashion forward clients. They give me total artistic license, which can actually be limiting at times. I know that sounds crazy, but sometimes a client’s limitations can also be the most interesting challenges.

I am also redesigning the headware for the female Air Canada pilots which is a great honour. Oh, and of course, a birthday hat for a very special lady who turned 80!

How would you describe your style of hats?

Modern, with certainly vintage inspiration. Organic, thoughtful.

Who do you make hats for?

I make both casual and dress hats for church/synagogue goers, brides, guys, theatre. I say yes to everything except requests for baseball caps.

Any other interests?

I am training for my first marathon. Some of my best ideas come from being in the running “zone”. I love architecture and great food. I also read a lot. Oh, and a good belly laugh everyday is key!

Where and did you learn millinery?

I found Millinery by pure luck. I wanted to take a holiday in 2004 to go away. I was having some crisis, not happy with my marriage and my career. I decided to go to London. Not wanting to just spend my holiday treasure hunting in antique markets and car boot sale (I am a second hand freak), I decided to see if there is any short study course. I found the website of London College of Fashion and they offered a one-week course in hat making. That is the first time I saw the term millinery. At that time I just thought the word millinery sound romantic. So I enrolled and that became my first encounter with the craft.

On the first day of class I actually did have the feeling of romance! Standing in front of the school building I did feel 18 again… no work… just going to school everyday! I felt even better after the first day of school! I was charged with excitement, a new energy. Just like falling in love for the first time! Romantic, after all, is the perfect word to describe my first taste of millinery. I fell in love and wanted more. So I took a longer holiday in July the same year to attend the summer school at London College of Fashion. I also attended classes taught by Royal Milliner Rose Corey. This passion became so strong that I decided to spend all my time on millinery and decided to change my career. I was working as a fashion stylist in Hong Kong and wasn’t too happy with work. With this new found passion, I found new light for my creativity.

How long have you been a milliner for? Where else did you work? Who do you make hats for?

I did not really start doing serious work until July 2005. Although I really have a passion for millinery, I was a bit worried about getting work. It is not common for people in Hong Kong to wear hats. We wear fashion hats like baseball caps and sun hats and that’s all about it! It’s not common practice for ladies to wear hats to the races.

When I tell people I am a milliner, they have to look up the dictionary for the meaning of the word. If I make it simple by saying I am a hat designer, they sometimes ask me to make them a baseball cap!

I was a bit hesitant to go full time into millinery, so I started by creating cocktail hats and headdresses and set up my website. So that everytime people ask me what I do, instead of explaining, I give them my name card and invite them to visit my website.

Slowly the word got around and I began to get commission work. The website paid off. Although I still have not worked on a hat for the races, I am lucky enough to have started my career in millinery. My work includes concert head dresses for local pop singers, brides and fashion show headdresses. I am happy that I have found millinery .

Where do you get inspiration for your designs?

From everything, fashion magazines, art books, even ceiling fans!

What has been your most enjoyable commission?

Every one of them, because every commission is different and I learn new things every time.

How would you describe your style of hats?

I can’t really say what my style is. All commissions are very different, but I tend to work with quite a bit of free form structure.

What materials and techniques do you favor?

I try to work with materials that I can find in local supply. Since I do a lot of stage pieces, I can use a lot of different materials, plastics, hand bag materials and even metal and leather.

Any other interests?

After finding millinery, this became my only interest, because I still have a lot to learn.
