How did you become interested in millinery?

The story began in England in the late 1980s. I was living in London at the time and working in a completely different profession when I started doing an evening class in millinery. My day job did not require much creative expression so I was keen to unleash that through hats! I had always been interested in fashion and textiles.

Where did you learn millinery?

At evening classes with Rose Cory (who created hats for the Queen Mother) in London; at Wimbledon School of Art, also in London, where I studied costume and specialised in costume millinery.

How long have you been a milliner? Where did you start?

I got my first job as a milliner in 1990, with a period costume company in London. I made hats for different film and television productions: BBC dramas (“Pride and Prejudice”, “Persuasion” and “The House of Eliott”), Merchant Ivory films (“Howards End”, “The Remains of the Day” and “Jefferson in Paris”), etc. I worked with costume designers, interpreting their designs. The actors came in to be fitted for the costumes including the hats. I learnt a lot about the history of hats, as I would research the millinery fashions of the period before I started making hats for each film. In 1995 I returned to Melbourne and started my studio in The Nicholas Building. My focus is now on formal occasion hats, the races, and special events. Occasionally I have some historical or costume commissions, which I enjoy. I have taught at several tertiary institutions over the years; Kangan Tafe, Swinburne University, Council of Adult Education, Central Gippsland Tafe and Artist in Residence at Box Hill Senior Secondary College. Focus my teaching to classes in my wonderful studio in the heart of Melbourne.

Having worked in film, can you mention some of the actors who have worn your millinery creations?

Tom Cruise in the movie “Far and Away”, Vanessa Redgrave, Emma Thompson and Helena Bonham Carter in “Howards End”, Minnie Driver (“Mr. Wroe’s Virgins”), Nick Nolte (“Jefferson in Paris”) and Jennifer Ehle in “Pride andPrejudice”.

Where do you get inspiration for your designs?

I get inspiration from the fabrics I use. I’m always on the look out for different materials to design hats and fascinators. Garage sales and hardware stores can reveal some interesting treasures. I also draw inspiration from historical work I’ve done.

Who are your customers?

The Melbourne Cup punctuates my year with regular race goers, women working in the racing industry and people heading off to the event for the first time – all coming to me for hats and fascinators. However, the racing season does not stop there. Australia hosts racing carnivals around the year; the Cairns Amateurs, the Darwin Cup, Broom Cup, the Magic Millions, all bring
women to my millinery studio, in person or through this website. Weddings are also another event that can require a beautiful hat. Brides and mothers of brides and grooms come to me for a bespoke hat for their special occasion.

For the last 10 years I have partnered with Hugo Boss Australia and designed contemporary on off millinery to be worn with their women’s wear Spring range – you can view these ranges on my website.

What are your recent projects?

In 2008 the National Gallery of Victoria (NGV) purchased Miss Moneypenny and Bibi Cap for its collection! In 2016 the gallery featured these hats in their 200 Years of Australian Fashion exhibition. I am thrilled to be a part of this historic event!

What have you done internationally in recent years?

Since 2006 I have worked in Dubai, in the United Arab Emirates, exhibiting and selling hats in the lead up to the Dubai World Cup. The event has the world’s biggest prize money to the winning horse! The fashions on track are an eclectic mix, reflecting styles and trends from around the world at this international event. I went there again in 2008 and exhibited my hats at the BurJuman Center.

In 2014 I exhibited and demonstrated some of my work at the Caussade International Hat Festival in the south of France.

I have had many pieces commissioned to be worn at Royal Ascot, England.

I have been proud to be featured several times in the international “The Hat Magazine”. This year I was given a 6 page spread featuring one of my workroom techniques in issue 68 of the magazine.

For the last 20 years I have been an active member of The Millinery Association of Australia. In 2008 I was coordinator for the “Hats Off To Melbourne” Millinery Convention. In more recent years I have been their Education Consultant, organising professional development and international workshops for the members. This year, 2016 I am a member of their committee, organising monthly speakers at meetings and a millinery competition for members.

Do you teach millinery?

I have taught at several tertiary institutions over the years; Kangan Tafe, Swinburne University, Council of Adult Education, Central Gippsland Tafe and Artist in Residence at BoxHill Senior Secondary College. Now focus on my teaching to classes in my wonderful studio in the heart of Melbourne. I run weekend and 5 day millinery intensives along with some occasional shorter evening courses with milliners Love Lotus and Lauren Ritchie. We release the the classes regularly on my website.

This is another rewarding part of my work – sharing skills and inspiring students to express their creativity.

How did you become interested in millinery?

Since I was a young girl I have always been interested in hats. I would spend a good deal of my pocket money on vintage hats from op-shops!

Where and how did you learn millinery?

After teaching myself how to sew when I was in high school, I made some fabric pillboxes. Still intrigued, I did a short course at Subiaco Hatters in Perth. After moving to Melbourne I was introduced to the wonderful world of model millinery by the talented Jill Nolan and Doris Chivers from Ascot School of Millinery. I have learned much from millinery master classes and a lot of learning just comes from experimenting. I never stop learning.

How long have you been a milliner? Where else did you work?

I started learning millinery about 20 years ago. I’m not sure when the transition was made from student to milliner! I have a science degree and worked for 10 years as a research assistant but it wasn’t me. I then went back to school to study fashion. Millinery has always been there as a creative outlet.

Where do you get inspiration for your designs?

I am in love with vintage fashion so that would be huge inspiration. It also comes from fabrics (a self confessed fabric addict!) and textiles, architecture, flowers, colour, textures and the millinery materials themselves.

What has been your most enjoyable commission?

It is most enjoyable when your client trusts you enough to give you creative control (and enough time to complete it well).

How would you describe your style of hats?

Simple, yet bold. No fluff! Contemporary with a touch of vintage.

Who do you make hats for?

Mostly race-goers, but my hats are for anyone and everyone. I am making a range of kids hats!

What materials and techniques do you favour?

All millinery materials are appealing to me, especially the vintage ones. I prefer shaping a hat in the hand over blocking and love the freedom of wirework.

Do you have any other interests, hobbies?

I love to sew and have recently done some fashion-related short courses – screen printing, jewellery and bag making. My remaining time is spent with my family. We love to cook and eat!

My Dad worked at the TAFE in Wangaratta and saw a short weekend course in Albury to make a hat, our family has always been interested in dress making and it just seemed like a fun weekend making and learning with my younger sister. We attended the headpiece making course and returned the following month to the hat making course with Elizabeth Hemsley.

Where did you train in Millinery? What was the best aspect of your training?

I attended formal training at Kangan Batman TAFE with a Certificate II, III and IV in Millinery which took three years of one evening a week to complete. I had some wonderful tutors in Serena Lindeman and Paris Kyne. TAFE training was very important in building my skills and I had the opportunity to apply these skills working while working for Louise Macdonald which was invaluable. It has allowed me to refine my technique without the concern for developing a design and having my workmanship be the second thought or my design suffer because of my inability to complete a technique. I was fortunate enough to undertake workplace with Louise Macdonald in my first year of study and was invited back and was part of her team for 7 race carnival seasons.

Who do you make hats for? Churchgoers? Brides? Everyday wear?

I make hats for every occasion including every day for Winter and Summer. I really enjoy creating a special occasion piece either for a race day or wedding but also love to help a client find or create their favourite hat.

Where do you get inspiration for your designs?

When I design I am thinking about where the piece could be worn – is it indoor or outdoor? Winter, Summer or trans-seasonal? I want to create a range of pieces that provide options to my customer when they are looking for their next style.

Do you wear many hats yourself?

I do – I have a summer hat that I wear everyday outside to lunch and a selection of wool headpieces and hats by the door during winter to pick something as I step out of the house. It doesn’t have to be large but something as long as there is something on my head.

Who would you most like to see wearing one of your pieces?

I would really like to see the continuation of headpieces growing within evening social events – Melbourne’s headpiece and hat wearing is very focused on Melbourne Carnival and I would love to see this continuing to expand. It doesn’t have to large pieces, smaller pieces can be just as stunning. There are so many innovative milliners in Australia looking for opportunities and the experience of having a piece made or putting together a head to toe outfit is someone many women enjoy. I think it falls back to a confidence aspect of wearing something different which is such a privileged. When my Nan saw my sister and I wear a hat or headpiece she commented about how wonderful it is to see us dressed but she then once followed this with how she was one of the first people to stop wearing hats to church. I think this a really interest social aspect of hat wearing and I have heard many examples of similar stories. The generation who stop wearing hats is the one that is nostalgic for the next generation to continue – it is a very interesting contradiction.

Describe your workroom atmosphere – do you play music, share a table, can you see the floor?

My workroom is currently being relocated and I am looking forward to placing my materials and equipment in their new home to be able to share the beautiful materials with my clients.

Do you have any other interests, hobbies?

I enjoy dancing in particular swing dancing.

I became interested in millinery back in the early 1980’s while I was in art school and decided to make myself a New Years dress and a matching hat. I was also fascinated by headwear from various countries and throughout history.

Where and how did you learn millinery?
My mother was a seamstress and taught me to sew. I also learned it from a friend of my moms while we were back in Paris. Later I took a workshop with Louise MacDonald.

How long have you been a milliner for?
Since the late 1980’s. I studied art and then Interior Design, but ventured into hat making late 1980’s, which led me to open up my own hat store.

Where else did you work?
I freelanced most of my life and supported myself on my creative ventures.

Where do you get inspiration for your designs?
From my vintage wardrobe, old movies, nature, and some sci-fi.

What has been your most enjoyable commission?
Creating a hat for a sci-fi series in Toronto Canada.

How would you describe your style of hats?
Vintage inspired.

Who do you make hats for? Churchgoers? Brides? Everyday wear?
Mostly for all occasions, I love creating hats for film and television. Anything that allows me to explore materials.

What materials and techniques do you favour?
Anything that I can sculpt.

Do you have any other interests, hobbies?
I am an artist (www.mariacurcic.ca) and a dj with my own station, www.radioradio.ca
