My husband (until recently) for many years owned and breed race horses as a hobby and I was a fashion designer, so I thought I would go and learn more about millinery to add to my skills and to make hats to match my garments. I had already done a small course in millinery which was part of my Associate Diploma of Fashion Couture Stand many years ago. Once I started learning millinery on its own I discovered I love making hats more than fashion garments, and I no longer design garments expect only for myself.

Where and why did you learn millinery?

At Ultimo TAFE certificate 3 and 4 and theatrical millinery.

How long have you been a milliner for?

I have been doing millinery for about 5 years now and before that I was doing fashion designing and owned my own fashion boutique. This year I won The Public Vote Award and Third Prize in The Hat Designer of the Year contest in London which is in this months The Hat Magazine Issue 31. It was a lot of hard work but I did enjoy doing it.

Where do you get inspiration for your designs?

I get my inspirations from all kinds of things: feathers, flowers, lace, buildings, nature and the world around me, but, when designing for a client, I get my inspiration from the garment they will be wearing, occasion and what will suit them along with what they would like their hat or headpieces made from and trimmed in.

What has been your most enjoyable commission?

All my commissions have been enjoyable. Last week I finished making a beautiful headpiece for a bride. She was getting married on the 25 November, which was my wedding anniversary. This made it extra special. I made for her a sculptured headpiece from champagne coloured straw with lots of feathers (as she loved feathers) and Swarovski crystals. It looked stunning and very original for a bride, so that was very satisfying.

Who do you make hats for?

What materials and techniques do you favor?

I like working with beads feathers and lace and I like to do a lot of hand sculpturing.

Any other interests?

Animals and my pets, live shows and concerts, movies and traveling.

Interestingly, I fell into the industry quite by chance! Amusingly, I always thought I’d become an actress, as I sometimes have a flair for the dramatic. However, I unintentionally applied for a Junior Bridal Millinery position at 18 and since then I have learnt nearly every technique known thanks to the ever changing fashion trends over the last 11 years. I come from an extraordinarily talented family, so pursuing a career with my hands and creative mind was never not an option!

Where and why did you learn millinery?

Luckily for me I was paid to learn in a career I loved and I learnt and applied every technique very quickly progressing to head milliner! When I initially started millinery in the bridal industry, floral halos and enormous princess tiaras were the fashion, but over the years fascinators, cocktail hats and feather jewel combs evolved again, so I’ve seen many various fashions come and go.

How long have you been a milliner for?

I’d mainly been a design milliner for 10 years, but before launching my own label I also worked with the same designer label over the years as Head Buyer, Production Manager, National Sales Representative and I’m sure a great deal more! I’ve also been very lucky to travel Australia wide and work exclusively with many leading couture fashion designers, creating a look perfected to their clientele. Aside from millinery I also trained in couture jewellery design, so have an extensive collection of beautiful Swarovski pieces ranging from earrings, bracelets, necklaces, to bandeaus and tiaras that have been personally designed.

Where do you get inspiration for your designs?

I’m mostly influenced by the French glamour of the 40s and I love the bygone era where women truly dressed like women: feminine, sensuous and undeniably sexy. However, I may also be working on two designs when the inspiration comes and I mix them together; voila! I definitely derive inspiration from the beauty of nature, but I do also design some hats with a modern twist. Exotic feathers, beautiful flowers and gorgeous luxurious fabrics are what motivates me. Each hat needs to be sensational and I never design something I wouldn’t wear myself.

What has been your most enjoyable commission?

My most enjoyable commissions this year so far has been for the racing ladies of Ascot, where we do consultations via email as it can be quite challenging. I’m flattered when people contact me from six continents away and specifically ask me to commission a special design and they absolutely trust me to go ahead with it! Most recent though was a gorgeous bride from England, who sent me pictures of her beautiful day immediately after her honeymoon and thanked me for making her look so beautiful. That kind of appreciation makes millinery design so worthwhile!

Who do you make hats for?

Aside from retailers, my largest commissions are race day and bridal wear worldwide.

What materials and techniques do you favor?

I have an absolute passion for feathers and there are so many versatile ways they can be shaped, manicured and curled! I have the utmost respect for birds and their plumage is just glorious! I also love amazing trims, but interestingly I haven’t managed to work much with sinamay this year, as I’ve had numerous requests for large accessorizing features on small cocktail bases, but have a few sensational shapes in mind, so keep an eye out!

Any other interests?

Gourmet cooking, fine wine, royal history, French history, learning Irish Gaelic, traveling and naturally my wonderful family and friends!

I became interested in millinery quite subconsciously really. I loved wearing hats as a New Romantic in the 1980s whilst studying for my law degree. I have always been fascinated by fashion starting buying “Vogue” when I was 11 and was drawn to the way a hat completed the look in the collections of Vivienne Westwood, etc. When I was heavily pregnant with my first son, I had to go to a family wedding and found a wonderful Sandra Phillips hat which was the spark. On moving to the North of England I retrained in textiles and began to see the many possibilities in creating 3D pieces, so began a millinery course.

I made some hats whilst on my textiles course, then started to train with couture milliner Peter Kingston Youel in 1999 at Leeds College of Art and Design. After completing this I also studied the City and Guilds Millinery courses in Huddersfield to focus my skills whilst setting up business.

How long have you been a milliner for?

I have been a milliner for 6 years, I also teach millinery at Leeds College of Art and Design and initially taught textiles as well.

Where do you get inspiration for your designs?

The inspiration for my designs comes from many different sources. Sometimes the materials lead you to a hat design, sometimes a new block shape. I am also influenced by films from old 50s classics to the wonderful visuals in Hong Kong cinema to sci fi films like “Dune” and “Blade Runner”. A walk on the Yorkshire Moors can be as inspiring as anything though.

What has been your most enjoyable commission?

One of my favourite commissions was for a regular customer who likes to create an elegant stir at the races. I had recently discovered the joys of working with wire to create sculptural forms and she was eager to try something radical. So a sweeping shape was created to work on top of a small cap, the shape was covered with silver grey ribbon and then woven with silver organza ribbon, it was worn with a silver shift dress and was much admired apparently.

How would you describe your style of hats?

My style is a mix of my textiles background and my love of uncluttered clean shapes. So my hats are usually simply trimmed and the shape is the focus, I also use a lot of crin in my work.

Who do you make hats for?

I make hats for a broad spectrum of customers, mother of the bride, race goers, Royal Garden Parties, occasionally winter hats but those are usually for art galleries.

What materials and techniques do you favor?

I love working with felts and straws I am not overly keen on sinamay unless it is unstiffened, where I then dye it and create free form shapes. I also like to use vintage finds and am trying to build up my knowledge to use more eco friendly fabrics such as hemp or recycled fabrics. At the moment I do use a lot of crin and am unsure of its eco credentials so will need to find a new solution. I am constantly seeking and trying out new ways of working so I think that my work and way of working is changing all the time.

Any other interests?

I have two sons of 11 and 13 who keep me very busy and two rescue dogs that I love walking. My family all windsurf so I am often to be found by the sea or a lake walking the dogs. I am very into music mainly indie music but I love a good song.

She has been designing hats and teaching millinery under her Katrinka label since the 1980s. Kate is also the founder of Houston Hat Net.

How did you become interested in millinery?

I have loved hats for as long as I can remember. Having a large head size (23), I had trouble buying hats in my size when the millinery industry switched to the dreaded “one size fits all” in the United States. So I had to learn to make my own.

Where and why did you learn millinery?

In the 1980s I was living in New York City and looking for a new career after acting. I discovered the millinery program at FIT and studied with Ann Albrizio. I completed the Millinery Certificate program and began showing my hats to friends and acquaintances.

How long have you been a milliner for? Where else did you work?

I received my Millinery Certificate in 1989. Costume Designer Marjorie McCown hired me to make hats for Street Scene at City Opera which led to other offers. I was ultimately recruited to the Alabama Shakespeare Festival, where I was milliner for two years until I married and moved to Texas. In Texas I was busy helping my husband through law school and being a stepmother, but I kept my hand in millinery by teaching millinery in the Fashion program at Houston Community College and showing my hats with Houston Area Fiber Artists and at galleries such as Houston Center for Contemporary Craft. I founded Houston Hat Net when students complained that no one wore hats in Houston. They do now. HHN currently numbers over 300 members.

Where do you get inspiration for your designs?

Just about everywhere. In the theatre we used to say that “Anything can become a hat”. I collect and study vintage hats to continue my technique education and have found lots of inspiration in my garden.

What has been your most enjoyable commission?

I was invited to show hats at a pre-Kentucky Derby party in Houston in 2005. Party guests (including the men) were so taken with hats that it resulted in a large order all of which were flown in a private jet to the Kentucky Derby. I heard later that one of my hats was singled out as being the “best hat at the Kentucky Derby”. I wrote an article about the experience which was published by the American Sewing Guild in Houston.

How would you describe your style of hats?

That’s a tough one! Eclectic, probably. I love making art and cocktail hats but don’t find much of a market for them tho’ I do have a few collectors. Currently, one of the things I am working on is a line of casual hat patterns for sewing enthusiasts. I believe that the more women wear hats casually – everyday – the more willing they will be to invest in an occasion or cocktail hat. We’ve lost a lot of millinery momentum in the United States but I am optimistic about youthful interest in hats.

Who do you make hats for?

I’ve done all of the above and am getting more commissions from men too. Since my husband is now working in Switzerland I have left my studio in storage and am currently living in St. Gallen working on a book I’ve had in mind. My hat patterns are carried by www.judithm.com and my hats are appearing in Belle Armoire magazine from time to time.

What materials and techniques do you favor?

Since I am working lately with fabric hats I have been experimenting with straw fabrics such as raffia and sinamay. I have also become fascinated with fabric collage since taking an inspiring class with Rosemary Eichorn. Since St. Gallen used to the be the center of the lace industry in Switzerland I am exploring lace now too.

Any other interests?

My primary focus is teaching and writing these days. I also sew clothing for myself, read, garden and currently am exploring Europe while I have the opportunity.

I was looking to start my own business (ladies clothing and occasion wear) the premises I finally found had previously been a hat shop so I decided to stock hats.Customers came who wanted hats colour matched to outfits and ladies with large heads wanted headwear that fitted them so that is where it all began!

Where and why did you learn millinery?

I initially enrolled on a beginners course at the Wombourne school of Millinery to learn the basics – after that I was hooked.I have subsequently been on other courses to learn about feather dressings, fabric dying, how to make metal framed hats.Other than that my skills have been self-taught, but I think its fair to say millinery has become a bit of an obsession. I love it so much I make hats and fascinators almost every waking hour.I have even been known to wake up in the night and jot down an idea that popped into my head

How long have you been a milliner for? Where else did you work?

I have been a practicing milliner for 3 years now.I started my business in 2001

Where do you get inspiration for your designs?

I find inspiration from all sorts of things – fabrics and shapes ,Catwalk shows and fashion collections. Some clients bring ideas with them and from there we work on ideas together. Mostly I have to say that my more whacky hats just seem to evolve by experimentation.

What has been your most enjoyable commission?

My favourite commissions are race day hats when you can be daring and go a bit wild!

How would you describe your style of hats?

I would say that most of my work is very wearable and commercial , punctuated by the odd whacky design.

Who do you make hats for?

I make hats for all occasions – most commissions come via my shop but I also a fair bit of wholesale work.On the whole I would say Mother of the Bride and raceday events are at least 70% of my business.

I have always been interested in art and sculpture and, combined with my love of making things, millinery seemed to be a good balance of these interests.

Where and why did you learn millinery?

I took a number of classes with Louise Macdonald at Swinburne University; however, I am largely self-taught. I enjoy discovering new techniques from fellow milliners and from viewing millinery collections, for example at the National Gallery of Victoria and other exhibitions.

How long have you been a milliner for? Where else did you work?

I have had my own millinery business for the past three years. My main area of work is with the contemporary art fair, Melbourne Art Fair, which is coming up this August. I used to (and still do!) make hats for my colleagues at Melbourne Art Fair to wear to the Melbourne Cup. When people started to compliment on them and ask where they were from, I was inspired to start my own business.

Where do you get inspiration for your designs?

Inspiration comes from many different areas: organic forms, other cultures and their fashion. My second collection was inspired by the 60s films of French director/actor Jacques Tati.

Predominantly for race goers; however, I have started doing more bridal wear.

My hats are quite non-traditional, as I usually don’t work with conventional millinery materials, for example hat blocks. I usually block on objects and also hand sculpt different forms.

Any other interests?

I enjoy visiting contemporary art galleries, watching old movies, taking photos and walking in the botanical gardens with my new son Felix.

Before I became immersed in the world of hats, I spent most of my free time doing my family genealogy. I decided to combine this hobby with my love for sewing. So I started making a 1910 tea dress. Well, a little research showed that ladies of the day wore hats. I decided I needed one. Well it is now 5 years later, I’ve made about 400 hats and the tea dress is still not finished.

Where and why did you learn millinery?

I began with a class at a local fabric store, an introductory class. I took several more classes from Jan Wutkowski in North Carolina, United States. Then I really got hooked! Since then I have bought ever book, both vintage and current, on the subject and just practiced and practiced. The Wombourne School of Millinery e-books have been really helpful. The more I learn, the more I realize I need to learn.

How long have you been a milliner for? Where else did you work?

I have been making hats for a short time. This is my fourth year. At first my millinery was a hobby, but, when friends and acquaintances started asking me to make them hats, it soon became a business. I sell hats from March to October at art festivals and make hats the rest of the time. I also work full time as a teacher.

Where do you get inspiration for your designs?

I tend to get inspired and work on variations of a theme. I might see a movie and try to do a variation on a hat from that movie. I usually try to have 3 unique elements in each hat. Texture, color, form are the elements I like to experiment with. I tend to like asymmetrical looks. Hand dying my straw hats in the summer on my back porch and experimenting with colors are akin to making mud pies when I was much younger…

How would you describe your style of hats?

My hats are what I call “Americana”. They appeal to a wide range of tastes, traditional to the romantic and classic shapes, but are subtly unique, not too loud or flashy. My most popular hats are very everyday wearable. A lady will be noticed in one of my hats but not considered too flashy.

What has been your most enjoyable commission?

All of my commissions have been enjoyable, but my most satisfying was creating a classic black cocktail hat that had three interchangeable trims. My customer was looking for a versatile hat that she could wear to several events and be able to change the look subtly…

Who do you make hats for?

The majority of my customers are American women that are looking for a hat that will become their favorite to pop on their heads before going to the grocery store or to their child’s sporting event or just for a ride in the Blue Ridge Mountains.

What materials and techniques do you favor?

At this point I love to block straw, and felt and sinemay. And I have sewn a few fabric hats from patterns. Since my husband is a wood turner and makes me my hatblocks, I am still experimenting with hat blocking and it remains my favorite technique.

Any other interests?

At this time I am teaching myself French flower-making and working on making some of my own flower trims.

I became interested wearing hats when I was in high school. I had a fabulously popular sister and my two best friends (one blonde and one red-head) were all gorgeous. How was I to compete? In hindsight; I realized that I could get attention from wearing hats. And I did! But it was not until my first professional job after college that I started making hats. I was the assistant costume designer at the Walnut Street Theatre in Philadelphia; I met Barbara Taylorr, a theatrical milliner. I watched her trim a hat for “My Fair Lady” and I fell in love! I was taught the secret little movements that make the hat special! I begged her for a job and she hired me! And that was it! I found my passion.

Where and why did you learn millinery?

I majored in theatrical costume design and I apprenticed with other milliners. My main mentor is Rodney Gordon from Rodney Gordon Studio, Inc. I was his assistant for years. He taught me the finest points on the perfections of millinery. The finest points on shape, trim, and attention to detail. I have ripped many seams out and redone them!!!!

How long have you been a milliner for?

Professionally, I made my first hat in 1988. So that is 18 years! I have owned my business and worked in it full-time since the summer of 1993.

Where else did you work?

Walnut Street Theatre in Philadelphia (Pennsylvania); Alabama Shakespeare Festival in Montgomery (Alabama); ABC: Great Lakes Shakespeare Festival in Cleveland (Ohio); Studio Area Theatre in Buffalo (New York); Barbara Taylorr Millinery in Philadelphia (Pennsylvania); Rodney Gordon Studio, Inc in New York City (New York).

Where do you get inspiration for your designs?

Number one inspiration is from clothing on the street and the runways. Number two is from buyer and retail customer ideas. Number three is from fashion trends and magazines. But there is always an underlaying theme of elegance of many kinds and from many eras. My only other inspiration is trees and all kinds. But that is more about flow and movement then anything else.

What has been your most enjoyable commission?

I love it when a customer gives me a swatch and a few guidelines and just trusts me. Other then that, I love the horse races. I like working with The Keeneland Shop at Keeneland Park in Lexington and with Luna Boutique in Louisville (Kentucky). They give me the freedom to do what I do best.

How would you describe your style of hats?

My hat collection is so diverse that it is said to be 93 uncategorical 94! How I describe my hats is this way: something for everyone, classic with a twist, attention to every detail and the most comfortable hats to wear. My company and my hats are integrity.

My main customer is an everyday customer all year long, although I have church ladies, derby and event customers as well.

What materials and techniques do you favor?

Silk trim – hand rolled roses and bows. I like it all even buckram covered hats. As far as felt and straw, I like them both equally. My employees I think prefer felt. I love cut and sew hats in straw and felt personal the best.

I am a business owner so there is little time for other things. I love my husband Blake, my family, especially my niece, Fiona. I love my heritage of both Scotland and Ireland. I also play the piano. I love trees, and the Hills of Pennsylvania where I grew up!

I became interested in millinery while studying for my Diploma in Fashion Design and Manufacture in Perth, Australia.

Where and why did you learn millinery?

I completed the millinery components of my Diploma in Fashion Design and Manufacture at Seaforth College in Sydney and enjoyed it so much that I haven’t stopped making hats and collecting hat blocks since.

How long have you been a milliner for? Where else did you work?

For the last 4 years we have been living in Dubai and this is the first time that I have relied solely on my millinery for an income. Before moving here, millinery was more of a hobby for me as I worked in administration during the day and made hats at night.

Where do you get inspiration for your designs?

I don’t know where I get my inspiration for my designs – it just happens. I love glamorous hats and there is nothing more rewarding than seeing the transformation in a lady’s appearance when she puts the right hat on. It is a shame we don’t wear hats more often.

Who do you make hats for?

The Dubai World Cup, which was held on 25 March 2006, was my third Cup. All year I make hats and sell them in the ten days leading up to the Cup. I try to have around 200 hats finished for each Cup. I only make one of each design and they are all hand finished.

What materials and techniques do you favor?

This year I mainly used sinamay and I enjoy this material because of the flexibility it allows you to mould to any shape. I also use other straws and fabric (mainly raw silk), though I do not use felts very often, due to the climate here.

Millinery provides me with a creative outlet and balances my interests which also include investment in real estate and renovating houses and a few other ventures. My other interests include drawing and painting, reading and cooking (mainly Italian food).

Where and why did you learn millinery?

My millinery education started at the London College of Fashion, followed by a year at Kensington and Chelsea College.

How long have you been a milliner for? Where else did you work?

I have been a milliner now for 4 years, initially working for Stephen Jones and Edwina Ibbotson, before launching my own label almost 2 years ago. Prior to becoming a milliner I worked in advertising and marketing for 5 years.

Where do you get inspiration for your designs?

I find nature is full of inspiring shapes, often the simplest ones are the best. Art, particularly sculpture, is a good source, as is the elegance of vintage fashion. Inspiration may also just be elements of everyday life, the curve of a chair or the contours of a roof.

What has been your most enjoyable commission?

They are all so different! I love commissions where I am given a free rein to produce a hat encapsulating the wearer’s style, inspiring her to walk tall and feel wonderful.
