Somewhere Here with Andrea Cainero

Andrea Cainero is the designer and milliner behind the label Somewhere Here.  In 2023 she won the Millinery Australia Design Award with her piece Sweet Fontange which drew on her design and technical skills from across her career.

She trained at East Sydney Tech at the Fashion Design Studio TAFE NSW and went on to work in the local fashion industry.  After pursuing her own label for some years she took on the role of costume designer for the iconic Australian band Empire of the Sun

Andrea returned to East Sydney Tech as part of the teaching team where she is now one of the Heads of School.  When speaking with a colleague about skill development it inspired her to reroll in the millinery course taught by Penelope Gervais

In 2020 she won the MIMC Competition taking on the theme of making a hat or headpiece out of preloved or discarded materials with the piece Electric Fly Trap.  Loving the challenge of a competition she has also been an entrant in the Hattember Millinery Competition

Diving into the industry Andrea launched her label Somewhere Here.  The name came after taking a break from creative work and starting a family, she often found myself dreaming of past travels “somewhere” in the world, but was also happy to be “here” where she was in life. She shared “The name “Somewhere Here” was chosen for my headwear brand that combines my love of artisan couture fashion techniques with traditional millinery.“

Her work has been featured in the ATC Style Guides since 2021, and she has collaborated with stylists Donny Gallela, Suzi Eskander and Jess Pecoraro to create headpieces for Jules Robinson, Emma Freedman, Rebecca Harding, Kate Waterhouse and Lucia Hawley.
