Philip Treacy, a five-time award-winning British Accessory Designer of the Year, is renowned for crafting hats and accessories suitable for all occasions. His journey in the world of fashion has been marked by a significant collaboration with Isabella Blow, a devoted supporter and enduring source of inspiration since their initial encounter during a fashion shoot in 1989. During Treacy’s student years at the Royal College of Art, Isabella Blow became his unwavering advocate.
Post-graduation, Treacy spent three years living and working in the basement of Blow’s London house, creating many of his most surreal and sculptural hats for her. Their collaboration is explored through twenty hats in this book, serving as the catalog for the London Design Museum’s exhibit. Notable pieces featured include the astonishingly realistic “Ship,” a replica of an 18th-century French ship with rigging made from miniature buttons, the rose damask “Pope” inspired by the papal hat, and the “Castle,” paying homage to Blow’s ancestral home. The whimsical “Gilbert and George” features a fantastical concoction of pink and green lacquered ostrich feathers, while “Horns” is a black satin replica mirroring the horns of Blow’s flock of ancient Soays sheep.
The exhibit, documented in this book, also showcases photographs by esteemed artists such as Steven Meisel, David LaChapelle, Jurgen Teller, and Mario Testino, capturing Isabella Blow adorned in Treacy’s remarkable hats.
