Ellen Thommessen grew up with a love of textiles and hats, a passion sparked early by her grandparents. This interest in materials and form led her to study woman’s tailoring then costume, followed by a year specialising in pattern drafting in Stockholm, further strengthening her technical foundation.

Seeking to develop her millinery skills, Ellen travelled to London where she trained with Rose Cory and worked in the Philip Somerville workroom in 1991. These experiences exposed her to couture millinery techniques and the discipline of professional hatmaking. On returning to Oslo, she joined Oslo Nye Teater, where she now leads the costume workroom, overseeing production while continuing to refine her craft.

Alongside her theatre role, Ellen works freelance under her label Ellen Thommessen – Modist, creating pieces for other theatres, television productions, and private clients. Her work reflects a blend of traditional craftsmanship, sculptural curiosity, and a lifelong fascination with textiles.

As a member of the Norwegian Hat Makers Guild, Ellen has participated in numerous exhibitions and showcases that celebrate millinery artistry. She has also coordinated the Oslo Hat Walk with Gunn Rosnes, contributing to the visibility and appreciation of hatmaking within Norway’s cultural landscape.
