Kathryn Lee
Kathryn Lee’s millinery journey came full circle when she won the Millinery Award—an achievement that echoed the early days of her career, which began in Melbourne under the guidance of the legendary Lillian Frank. Starting out in hairdressing, Kathryn’s creative path soon expanded to include dance, hair, and makeup, allowing her to develop a deep understanding of style, movement, and personal expression.
After spending time in the United States, Kathryn returned to Sydney with her husband and established a women’s clothing boutique. Initially, millinery was an addition to her retail offerings, complementing her passion for fashion. However, at the beginning of 2020, she made the pivotal decision to close her boutique and dedicate herself fully to millinery, refining her craft and artistic vision.
Kathryn’s background in clothing and design is reflected in her work, where she seamlessly blends classic techniques with contemporary styling. Working from a converted balcony in her Potts Point home, she creates striking, innovative headpieces that showcase her attention to detail and flair for bold, sophisticated aesthetics.
Her award-winning piece for the Lillian Frank AM MBE Millinery Award hosted by the Victorian Race Club at Flemington Racecourse, It Girl, was a showcase of a strong design asthectic and use of materials. Featuring intricate beading techniques and hand-dyed vintage straw, the headpiece was styled with a 1960s-inspired hot pant jumpsuit, capturing the spirit of an era defined by confidence and glamour.
Always impeccably dressed, Kathryn enjoys attending race days with her husband, where she supports her clients competing in Fashions on the Field competitions. Her work has been featured in the Australian Turf Club Style Guides, Harper’s Bazaar, and Vogue Australia.
