Hattember is a competition that was founded by Milliner and Business Owner Catherine Kelly. Entrants of the Hattember Competition are sent a curated bag of materials supplied by Hatters Millinery Suppliers in which to create their entry from. The piece are received and judged by a panel of industry experts. The competition aims to raise funds for the John Skipper Kelly (JSK) Fund to create leadership opportunities for disadvantaged youth; promote wearing hats #hatsarenotjustfortheraces and to promote the millinery industry.
The competition has three categories this year; Millinery, Wearable Art and Novice. Entrants are all sent the same type and quantity of material and must use items in the bag create their piece.
Last year the Millinery section was won by Michelle Robertson with a raspberry coloured boater style, second place was awarded to Possum Ball and third to Diane Robertson. The Wearable Art section was won by Rachel Cherry with a red neck piece, second place awarded to Angie Jackman and third place to Vladamir Stratauic. Catherine is the milliner and founder of Embellish Atelier with a background in education, home economics and millinery. She works from her studio in Rozelle in the inner west of Sydney which is also home to Hatters Millinery Supplies.
